(The nine steps of devotion, I impart to you. Listen you well and remember it always. )

(The first step to devotion (Bhakti) is to keep company of the saints (Satsang).)

(The second step is to enjoy listening to legends/discourses pertaining to the Lord.)

(Selfless service to the Guru's lotus feet without any pride is the third step.)

(The fourth step is to earnestly sing praises of the Lord's virtues with a heart clear of guile, deceit or hypocrisy.)

(Chanting My Name with steadfast faith is the fifth step as the Vedas reveal. )

(The sixth, is to practice self-control, good character, detachment from manifold activities and always follow the duties as good religious person.)

(The seventh step is to perceive the world as God Himself and regard the saints higher than the Lord.)

(The eighth, is a state (which one arrives at when one travels the first seven steps) where there is no desire left, but the gift of perfect peace and contentment with whatever one has. (In this state) one does not see fault in others, even in a dream.)

(In this state, one has full faith in the Lord, and becomes (child-like) simple with no hypocrisy or deceit. The devotee has strong faith in the Lord with neither exaltation or depression in any life circumstance (but becomes equanimous).)

(Shri Ram adds that Shabri’s Bhakti is perfectly complete. Yet if anyone were to have taken even one step towards devotion, out of all nine, he/she would be very dear to the Lord.
)

Srimad Bhagavatam 7.5.23-24:

The nine forms of Bhakti: Bhakti has two major types - Sadhanroopa and Falaroopa.

Falroopa Bhakti is extensively explained by the Gopis in Shrimad Bhagwat.
Sadhanroopa Bhakti is again split up into nine types - more formally known as Navadha Bhakti:
Shravanam,  Kirtanam, Vishnoha Smaranam, Padasevanam,  Archanam, Vandanam, Dasyam Sakhyam, and Atmanivedanam ||

These are further explained:

(i) Shravanam - Shravana or ‘hearing’ is essentially listening to the talks upon the excellencies of God by holy men and so in the true sense is possible only in holy company. Shravana means listening the glories, stories, plays (lila) of incarnations of God with pure love. Devotees listen these stories so deeply that their mind is merged in loving thoughts of their beloved God.

(ii) Kirtanam - Kirtan is singing aloud and chanting God’s name and compositions on his deeds. It is often in the company of several other devotees. Music or dance may accompany it.

(iii) Vishnoha Smaranam - is the remembrance of Vishnu or the lord. The earlier two disciplines are often done in company where as Smaranam is performed alone. It is performed silently in meditation. Shabari (a women of lower tribe) remembered Lord Ram all the time and Lord Ram gave her eternal love in his own feet. There is a rule that whatever we remember all the time in our whole life, we remember the same at the time of death due to our practice. And our next birth depends upon what we remember at the time of death. If we remember God at the time of death, then cycle of birth and death stops and we get liberated and become one with God. So remembrance or Smarana of God is very essential.

(iv) Padasevanam - literally means ‘Service of His feet.’ The feet or ‘Pada’ here are symbolic of other manifest things. For example the earth is considered his feet and so service of all beings is propounded. Any work done as an offering to God is Padaseva - such as helping in temples in some way. An excellent example of Padasevana is Bharat, brother and greatest devotee of Lord Ram. When Lord Ram was in exile (vanvas), Bharat ji borrowed his wooden sandal and placed them on the royal throne (Rajsinhasana). He did not accepted the kingdom of Ayodhya but he worshipped these sandals as Lord Ram himself and served for him. As God is not present directly to our eyes we can worship an idol, picture, mental image etc. and also can serve for whole creation because it is form of God.

(v) Archanam - this is ‘idol’ worship or more popularly known as ‘Pooja’. It is in a way unique to Hinduism as it accepts image worship - extolling God’s Sakar (with form) nature.

(vi) Vandanan - literally means ‘salutation’ and takes the form of full prostration before the image signifying complete surrender at the feet of God. It means honouring the presence of a deity, person or thing. Great devotee Namdev is very famous for Vandana Bhakti. Once fire started burning Namdev's hut. Namdev ji was not there. Neighbors tried to put-off the fire. Suddernly, Namdev ji came there. he saw his hut is burning by fire. He became very happy. He stopped all people and instruct to not to put off the fire. Then he bowed down to fire and said, "O God, you are so merciful that you personally came to my house." God pleased with him and appeared there and said "O Namdev, you recognized me even in this form". Once, a dog picked Bati (rounded roasted dough bread) from Namdev's house and ran away. Namdev ji ran after the dog with butter in hand, saying "O dear God! Please stop. Please put the butter on Bati otherwise your mouth will be injured." God laughed with love, appeared and said "O Namdev! you recognized me in the form of Dog also. You are my dear one."

(vii) Dasyam - is serving God as his most obedient servant. Meera Bai, Sant Kabir, Surdas ji are excellent examples of Dasya bhakti.

(viii) Sakhyam - is love for God. Worshiping the lord as a friend The aim of making friend is to be in close company of God all the time, love him and feel oneness with him. Cowboys of Village Nanda made Lord Krishna their friend. Lord Krishna praised Sakhya Bhakti. He said, "A devotee, who make me friend, i always walk with him equally in his sorrows and happiness. I help my friend devotee on every step of his devotional practice." Also, Arjuna is another great example of Sakhya Bhakti.

(ix) Atmanivedanam - complete surrender of the self to God. Everything-surrender including physically, mentally and all worldly facilities are given by him and it will only be used for him.
The final three disciplines cultivate the attitude of service and surrender to God. They are there to remove all sense of ego and worldly life.
